Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer beginner Carnatic music lessons?

At this time, I do not offer instruction for complete beginners or for children below the age of 13. The pathways at Samarpana are designed for teens and adults who already have some prior exposure to Carnatic music and are seeking either a realignment of foundations, deeper musical inquiry, or artistic support.

Do you prepare learners for Arangetram or temple concerts?

No. Performance preparation such as Arangetram or temple concerts is not part of the work I offer through Samarpana. My focus here is on foundational clarity, depth of musical engagement, and reflective artistic development. If a learner’s goals include performance-oriented training, we can discuss this during the introductory call, or revisit the question later as their learning evolves. In some cases, after a period of foundational work, such as through the Alignment Path, we may regroup and consider what the most supportive next step might be, including transitioning to a teacher or an environment better suited for performance preparation.

Do you offer fast-track repertoire learning?

No. While learning compositions is an important part of Carnatic music, my teaching approach emphasizes engaging with them slowly and thoughtfully rather than accumulating repertoire quickly. I approach each composition as an opportunity to explore the character of a rāga and the musical ideas it carries. The goal is to internalize the music deeply so that it meaningfully shapes listening, voice, and musical understanding.

What if I am primarily looking to learn more songs?

Learning compositions is certainly a meaningful part of Carnatic music. However, if your primary goal is to learn a large number of songs quickly, my approach may not be the best fit. My teaching tends to focus more on depth, clarity, and reflective engagement with the music, allowing compositions to become pathways for deeper musical understanding rather than simply pieces of repertoire.

How do I know which pathway is right for me?

You do not need to decide beforehand. During the complimentary orientation session, I will ask about your musical background, goals, and current stage of learning. Together, we can explore whether one of the pathways at Samarpana is likely to be a supportive fit.

What kind of commitment do these pathways require?

These pathways work best for learners who are willing to engage with consistent practice and self-observation, while following their own natural rhythm. The most important commitment I ask for is a willingness to connect deeply with the music and enjoy the process, rather than rushing through it.

Are the sessions conducted online or in person?

All sessions are currently conducted online. In some cases, if significant foundational issues such as shruti or tālam instability require in-person work, I may recommend studying locally with a teacher for a period of time to stabilize the basics before choosing to learn online.

Do you accept learners from outside the United States?

Yes. Since all sessions are conducted online, learners from different locations are welcome, provided time zones allow for a workable schedule.

How frequently do lessons or sessions take place?

In most cases, I recommend meeting once a week, as regular contact helps support continuity in practice and learning. However, some learners may prefer a slower pace and choose to meet every other week. The exact rhythm can be discussed during the orientation session and adjusted based on the learner’s needs and availability. Companion Path sessions are scheduled on an as-needed basis rather than at a fixed frequency.

What are the fees for Samarpana’s pathways?

Fees are determined on a case-by-case basis. Because learners arrive with different musical backgrounds and needs, I prefer to first understand where a learner is in their journey and what kind of work might be most supportive. We can discuss the possible formats and associated fees during the orientation session. Since I welcome learners from different locations, I also take local cost structures into consideration. Learners outside the United States are offered fees appropriate to their region so that my offerings remain accessible and fair.

If you’re curious about how I might support your musical journey at Samarpana, I invite you to schedule a complimentary orientation session with me. This is an opportunity to explore your goals, reflect on your current practice, and consider how the pathways can best support your musical growth.

I wish you the very best in your musical journey!
